retirement. Typically, this means either improving investment performance, lowering fees, or providing better services.

• What role do service providers and other third parties have to play?
• What role has regulation played in promoting or stifling innovation? Member’s best financial interest, sole purpose test, data sovereignty, CPS 234 etc.

• We assume that industries only evolve when disrupted by technology: new organisations native to the new technology replace incumbents. This is rarely, if ever, the
case. History tells us that organisations easily absorb technology (given suitable cost benefit).
• Industries evolve when the institutional relationships within them a renegotiated to unlock more value. This may, or many not, involve the development of new technology.
• If organisations / industry are to smoothly sail into the future then it’s their institutional relationships that should concern them first. Indeed, putting technology first can cause problems as it solidifies old institutional relationships, making them difficult to evolve.
• Organisations that ignore evolving institutional relationships, or are unable to respond to them, can easily find themselves disrupted as their role in the industry—and so demand for their products and services—declines.
